Dear 2020 Indy Mini Participants and Friends:

As you are likely aware, on March 15, the CDC released updated guidance recommending the cancelation of all large events for the next 8 weeks in an attempt to slow the spread of COVID-19 (Coronavirus). In accordance with these guidelines, the 500 Festival is suspending all planned, in-person events scheduled through the second weekend in May, including the OneAmerica 500 Festival Mini-Marathon, Delta Dental 500 Festival 5K, scheduled for May 2.

The 500 Festival recognizes the unique and challenging times that we are all facing together. May will certainly look different than the last 60+ years but with options to participate virtually or to reimagine events, we are confident that the future looks bright and the things we hold dearly will continue - albeit in a different form. As a community nonprofit organization, the 500 Festival looks forward to providing events and programs that enrich lives, foster positive community impact and celebrate the Indy 500.

To the registered participants of the 2020 OneAmerica 500 Festival Mini-Marathon and Delta Dental 500 Festival 5K, we know that many of you have logged countless hours of training and have made numerous commitments to experience the thrill of crossing the finish line. We don’t take your commitments lightly and want you to know that we have exhausted all possible solutions to provide the Indy Mini experience as we have the past 43 years. We have also been cognizant of the resources that help us produce this community event which includes thousands of volunteers, medical personnel, IMPD, the Indiana National Guard, Homeland Security, Indianapolis Motor Speedway staff, corporate partners and many others. Given our current situation and out of respect for the ever-changing needs of those resource partners as well as the health and safety of our participants, the conclusion to advance the plan to make it a virtual run this year became the best possible choice. In addition to the participant options, we are also committed to providing an on-track running experience at the iconic Indianapolis Motor Speedway at a to-be-determined date later this year.

What does this mean for registered 2020 participants?
We have been working around the clock to provide participants with a range of options so you can pick one that fits you best. From rolling over your registration to next year’s race to participating virtually in 2020 from anywhere at any time, we hope you will continue to be a part of the Indy Mini experience. All registered participants were emailed details about available options on March 19. If you did not receive this email, please contact

Participant Options

1. Virtual Race: Complete the 2020 Indy Mini, 5K or challenges from anywhere, at any time. Simply run or walk the distance of your race then submit your time HERE. We’ll ship your 2020 shirt, medal and hat right to your door. You’ll also receive $10 off your 2021 Indy Mini registration, access to the Virtual Goodie Bag, and presale access to register for a new running / walking event we’re hosting at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in the future (date TBD).

Don’t worry, if this is your first virtual race. We’ll share more details, step-by-step instructions, helpful hints and plenty of reminders along the way at

2. Deferral:
You can rollover your registration to the 2021 race (scheduled for May 8, 2021) or the 2022 race (scheduled for May 7, 2022). There’s no cost or registration fees to defer your registration to 2021 or 2022. NOTE: Participants who defer their registration to another year will not receive a 2020 shirt & medal. Deferring your registration does not automatically register you for 2021 or 2022. We will send you information on how to complete your 2021 / 2022 registration without being charged.

3. Lend a Hand:
Help the 500 Festival minimize the economic impact of these cancelations and maximize our investments in our free programs for Indiana youth by forgoing the virtual race option and the deferral option. You’ll receive $10 off your 2021 Indy Mini registration and presale access to register for a new running / walking event we’re hosting at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in the future (date TBD).

Please select your preferred race option by May 2, 2020 at 11:59 pm ET. Instructions for submitting your selection are in the email that was sent to participants on March 19. If you do not submit your choice by the deadline, you will automatically be entered into the Lend a Hand option.
